🤍 Why Natural Candles Sometimes Soot (And What to Expect)

There’s something comforting about a candle burning softly in the background—the glow, the scent, the feeling it creates in your space.

At Chicks & Wicks, we use natural soy wax, clean fragrance oils, and cotton wicks to create a candle that feels as good as it looks. Because of this, you may notice something occasionally as your candle burns: a light soot or film on the inside of the jar.

And while it might seem unexpected, it’s actually completely normal.

🕯️ What is soot?

Soot is a light carbon residue that can appear when a flame isn’t burning perfectly clean at all times. Even in the highest-quality candles, small environmental factors can influence how a candle burns.

With natural wax candles, especially in lighter jars, this can sometimes be visible along the inside of the glass.

🔥 Why it can happen

There are a few simple reasons you might notice soot:

  • Airflow: Fans, vents, or open windows can cause the flame to flicker
  • Wick length: A wick that’s too long can create a larger flame
  • Long burn times: Burning for extended periods can cause excess heat buildup
  • Natural materials: Soy wax and clean fragrance oils burn differently than paraffin-based candles

✂️ How to minimize it

A few small habits make a big difference:

  • Trim your wick to ¼ inch before each burn
  • Keep your candle away from drafts
  • Burn for 2–4 hours at a time
  • Allow the wax to melt evenly across the surface

🤍 A part of the process

A light film or soot on the jar doesn’t affect the safety or performance of your candle—it’s simply a natural part of how clean-burning candles behave.

If needed, you can gently wipe the inside of the jar with a dry cloth once the candle has cooled.

✨ The beauty of natural

We choose to keep our candles clean, simple, and thoughtfully made—even if that means embracing small imperfections along the way.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about perfection.
It’s about the feeling a candle brings into your home.

For the moments that matter most.
