When most people think about how a candle burns, they immediately assume the wick is the most important factor. While the wick certainly plays a role, my recent beeswax taper testing taught me something surprising:
Sometimes the wax itself is the problem.
As I worked on developing our beeswax tapers for Chicks & Wicks Candle Co., I tested candles made with beeswax from different sources. I adjusted wick sizes, centered wicks perfectly, trimmed them properly, and followed the same pouring process for each candle.
The results were eye-opening.
The Same Wick, Different Results
When a candle doesn't burn correctly, many makers immediately start changing wick sizes. Too much dripping? Change the wick. Uneven burn? Change the wick. Large flame? Change the wick.
But what happens when you've tried multiple wick sizes and still see problems?
That's exactly what happened during my testing.
Using beeswax purchased from an unknown source, I experienced excessive runoff, uneven burning, and inconsistent performance. I tested different square braid wick sizes and made adjustments, but the issues continued.
Then I switched to beeswax from a reputable supplier.
Suddenly, the candle burned more evenly, the flame was more controlled, and the overall performance improved dramatically.
The wick hadn't changed.
The wax had.
Not All Beeswax Is Created Equal
Pure beeswax is a natural product, but its quality can vary greatly depending on how it's processed and sourced.
Low-quality or improperly processed beeswax may contain:

The Lesson I Learned
Testing beeswax tapers reminded me that candle making is part science and part art.
It's easy to blame the wick when a candle doesn't perform as expected. Sometimes the answer truly is a different wick size.
But sometimes the wick isn't the problem at all.
Sometimes the wax is telling the story.
Before endlessly changing wick sizes, it's worth taking a closer look at the quality and source of the wax being used.
Because even the perfect wick can't compensate for inconsistent materials.
